Bali continues to face serious waste management challenges as tourism grows across the island. According to the National Waste Management Information System, Bali generated more than 1.2 million tons of waste in 2024. This situation encourages many hospitality businesses to adopt more responsible operational practices. Sustainability programs, recycling initiatives, and circular economy efforts are becoming important priorities for hotels and resorts.

As part of this movement, Nestlé Nespresso recognized Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort with a Sustainability Award. The resort successfully returned more than 41,422 used coffee capsules for recycling throughout 2025. This achievement reflects the resort’s ongoing commitment to integrating sustainability into daily operations. The initiative also shows how small operational changes can support a larger environmental impact within Bali’s tourism industry.

The recycling initiative follows a circular sustainability approach designed by Nespresso. Used coffee capsules are collected during regular coffee deliveries and transported to Nespresso’s recycling facility in Jakarta. The aluminum materials are separated and transformed into new products for future use. Meanwhile, the coffee grounds are delivered to coffee farms in West Java and processed into compost to support agricultural activities and future harvests.

Kanmo Group and Nespresso plan to strengthen collaboration with hospitality partners across Bali. Their goal is to expand capsule recycling participation and encourage more sustainable tourism practices. The program also highlights the growing importance of responsible waste management within Indonesia’s hospitality sector. Through partnerships like this, the industry continues building a more environmentally conscious future for Bali.
